The Bahamas is a nation that is composed of 29 islands, 661 cays and islets in 2387. To the south, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and three submarines called Handkerchief Bank, Silver Bank and Navidad Bank, are all geographically a continuation of the Bahamas, but are not part of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
The Bahamas has a subtropical climate and tropical and is moderated significantly to the Gulf Stream waters, especially in winter. On the other hand, this often proves very dangerous in the summer and autumn, when hurricanes pass near or through the islands. Hurricane Andrew hit the northern islands during the 1992 Atlantic hurricane season, and Hurricane Floyd hit most of the islands during the 1999 Atlantic hurricane season.
